MONITORING TRAFFIC IN REAL-TIME

The safety and security of transportation infrastructures rely heavily on the use of CCTV and Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) cameras. But, as CCTV cameras become more popular in the field of traffic and roadway monitoring, it is becoming obvious that most of the information provided by CCTV cameras is under-used or not used at all because traffic operators are not aware of it in real-time.

In order to prevent secondary incidents and congestion, time is of the essence when detecting and responding to a traffic incident. This is the reason why traffic management centres have turned to advanced video surveillance solutions to help traffic operators to efficiently monitor traffic and quickly respond to incidents.

AUDIBLE OR VISUAL TRAFFIC INCIDENT ALARMS

Advanced video surveillance provides traffic operators with alarms (audible and/or visual) immediately after an incident occurs, before the consequences of this incident can even be noticed by a traditional surveillance system. This enables users to be warned in good time and the risk of multiple accidents and congestions is reduced.

Because it requires no setup or calibration, advanced video surveillance fits perfectly into any CCTV system. There is no need for additional or new cameras, and no need to use preset positions.

TRAFFIC TRACKING TECHNIQUES AND TRAJECTORY ANALYSIS

Existing video signals from the CCTV system (analogue or digitally encoded) are fed into a video detection unit. The video detection unit runs a detection algorithm. This algorithm is based on tracking techniques and trajectory analysis - it detects stopped vehicles within the field of view of the camera. It is a self-learning algorithm that does not require any setup or configuration: it automatically learns the traffic.

All video detection units are linked to a supervisor that receives and dispatches the alarms to workstations and / or ATMS / SCADA systems. Operators are then, instantly provided with the location of the incident, its type, the live video image and the recording of the seconds preceding the incident. The combination of all these elements allows for a fast and efficient response to all incidents.

HIGHWAY MANAGEMENT, SECURITY AND SAFETY

Citilog advanced video surveillance solutions have been designed to fit into an existing CCTV architecture, be it an analogue transmission or an IP-encoded CCTV network. Video detection units are located wherever the video signals are available (in the field, in a hub or at the traffic control centre).

Based on this field experience Citilog has developed specific algorithms to control camera vibrations. This ensures reliable and accurate detection even from cameras that are often shaken by high winds, such as those on highways and bridges.
