Using full-cube corner optic technology, 3M has developed new diamond-grade DG3 reflective sheeting to deliver exceptional performance for short, medium and long viewing-distances and at wide angles. New DG3 is ideal for use on primary routes, motorways and in urban and rural locations, and has already been incorporated into traffic safety schemes throughout the UK.
In these areas, signage has never been brighter, clearer or safer. Essex-based Route Signs has had its single biggest order for diamond-grade DG3 so far from Thurrock Borough Council, as part of a project to renew 120 speed roundels in the region. Managing director Mike Hope said, "The client usually asks for class ref 2 material for this kind of job. However, they specifically asked for microprismatic sheeting to be used in this instance, so we were happy to supply diamond-grade DG3 throughout, especially knowing that it was suited to every location in which it would be used."
DG3 meets or exceeds the minimum recommended luminance index in more driving situations (as set out in the new British standard for microprismatic sheeting, BS 8408:2005) than any other sheeting available today. Guaranteed to maintain a high level of luminance for 12 years, DG3 not only offers excellent performance, but provides a reliable, long-term safety investment - increasing visibility of traffic signs from all viewing distances, which can contribute to a reduction in speed and accidents.
As DG3 uses the same colour pigments as diamond-grade VIP reflective sheeting, it is easily integrated into existing set ups, as Route Signs' managing director, Mike Hope, confirms: "We have our own screen-printing facilities, and the beauty of it from the printer's point of view is that we could use the same inks and set up that we have always used for LDP and VIP. The sign-makers actually say that DG3 is a little easier to work with than LDP and VIP because it is a bit more flexible when laminating, and a little easier to cut."
One project, two solutions
3M's newest signing material has also been used in Doncaster's revolutionary Frenchgate complex, which combines retail outlets with integrated transport. To direct drivers safely to the new car parks within the complex, Vista Signs made 60 new signs using new DG3 reflective sheeting, All 60 signs were covered with 3M protective overlay film series 1160, and of those, 30 were further covered with engineer grade sheeting that was removed the night before the opening. This simple solution allows messages on a permanent sign to be changed overnight, and was used to obscure signs in advance of congestion charging in London and other high-profile schemes.
In addition to a wide range of innovative product solutions, 3M offers an excellent pre-sales advisory service, strong warranties and an exceptional after-sales service.
