3M, one of the biggest names in road safety, is delighted to announce that it has appointed ASD Metal Services as the UK and Ireland specialist stockist and distributor of its innovative new frangible post system.
The new frangible post system from 3M was unveiled at Traffex in April, heralding a new era in passive safety for the signing industry and providing a pioneering solution that fits neatly with the Highways Agency’s commitment to creating a more forgiving and safer roadside.
"The new frangible post system is set to have a really positive impact on road safety," said Mark Deakin, general sales and marketing manager of 3M Traffic Safety Systems. "This is the only post to date with an overall classification of NE2 when tested to EN 1276. We are now in a position to bring the system to market with ASD and share this pioneering new product with existing and new customers."
ASD Metal Services is part of the Klockner and Co group, one of the largest industrial steel stockholders in Europe and North America. Headquartered in Leeds, it operates more than 40 businesses from 31 separate locations across the country.
"We are delighted to be working with 3M as distributors and specialist stockists for the new frangible post system," commented Steve Moore, commercial manager for Signing Products. "This is a new and really exciting development in the signing industry which could impact on all roads across the UK."
The frangible post system is very lightweight (4.2kg per linear metre) making handling and installation easier and quicker than traditional posts. No special tools or techniques are needed and standard installation practices are recommended. One installer commented on the system, "It was a very straightforward installation. It's even easier than steel posts where we would normally use some lifting equipment."
Crash testing (to EN 12767) and third-party certification of the frangible post system is now complete. This means that this NE-rated frangible post can be used on local roads and be specified and installed on Highways Agency roads without having to file a departure. A European Commission funded project was behind the introduction of the new passive safety sign standards which are designed to minimise the risk of fatal off-road accidents. This modern concept in roadside engineering has the full support of the Institution of Civil Engineers, is backed by the Highways Agency and has increasing interest from motorists and road safety organisations.
