Daktronics Variable Message Signs and Dynamic Message Signs

Daktronics is leading the intelligent transportation systems (ITS) industry into a new era of traveler information by manufacturing Vanguard® dynamic message signs (DMS) with amber, full-matrix, high-resolution, and full-color capabilities. Daktronics’ financial stability and investment in new technology, including an advanced testing lab, ensures the reliability necessary for successful ITS projects.

With more than 2,500 installations, Daktronics has the experience to guide projects to success. 50 Daktronics sales and service offices provide quick local service.

Dynamic message signs for ITS applications

Daktronics offers DMS solutions for any ITS application. Freeways, arterial roads, managed lanes, toll facilities, bridges, and tunnels can all use highly legible DMS technology to manage traffic and inform motorists of incidents, warnings, alternate routes, AMBER Alerts™, and more.

Vanguard® dynamic message signs

Designed and manufactured in the US, Vanguard DMS solutions are an integral part of worldwide ITS. Each day, motorists depend on Daktronics’ Vanguard DMS to guide them to their destinations efficiently and safely. Thus, Vanguard DMS are built to meet the toughest ITS industry standards, using light-emitting diode (LED) technology from the world’s top LED manufacturers.

Daktronics’ Vanguard permanently mounted DMS are built as standard in hundreds of configurations, providing a quality solution for a wide range of traffic management applications such as displaying motorist information, incident management, managed lanes, and bridge/tunnel/toll road traffic control.

Daktronics recognizes that an ideal DMS should not need more than preventative maintenance in its lifetime.

Walk-in dynamic message sign

A safe, easily maintained walk-in DMS such as the Vanguard VF-2000 maximizes return on investment and greatly reduces lane closures. Quality ventilation systems, cabinet construction, and maintenance methods allow constant information to every passing traveler.

Front-access masked DMS

A clear polycarbonate face masked with black aluminum both improves contrast and protects the LEDs. Several vertically-hinged doors open and lock in position safely to provide easy access to all components.

Front-access louvered DMS

The louvered face of the full-featured Vanguard VF-2300 DMS optimizes contrast and allows a 30° or 70° viewing angle. The DMS modules quickly unscrew from the face to provide access to internal components.

Rear-access DMS

The Vanguard VF-2100 DMS’ sealed rear doors unlock, pull out, and slide to the right or left, allowing quick access to internal components, especially in bridge-mount DMS applications.

Dedicated dynamic message sign (DDMS)

The VM-1020 DDMS offers maximum performance for minimal investment in travel time and toll rate applications. All critical components reside in a DDMS cabinet on the ground, allowing easy maintenance, simple LED panel installation onto static panels, and the full features of traditional DMS.

Variable speed limit sign

Enact speed control over roads with MUTCD speed limit signs from traffic management centers with full-color (black numbers on a white LED background) VS-5220 variable speed limit signs (VSLS). VSLS reduce the quick starting and stopping of traffic that leads to congestion on arterial roads.

ITS standards

Daktronics continues to have technical representation on multiple industry committees and working groups. We design DMS to all rugged ITS standards, including NEMA TS 4, UL, AASHTO, and NTCIP v2. Daktronics installed its first NTCIP-compliant DMS in the summer of 1999. Since that time, Daktronics has provided hundreds of NTCIP-compliant systems for various ITS applications.

DMS traveler information systems

For 40 years, Daktronics has led the advancement of the electronic display system industry. According to iSuppli, Daktronics is the leading provider of LED displays worldwide. Millions of people count on Daktronics displays every day for information, direction, and entertainment.
