TOTAL Bitumen - Industrial Bitumen and Bitumen Emulsion for Road Surfacing

The bitumen business is divided into two main activities: road and industry. With 11 products themselves divided into several classes, TOTAL provides each client with specifically adapted solutions:

STYRELF and EVATECH - road surfacing bitumens

STYRELF is a cross-linked elastomeric polymer-modified bitumen initially developed for use in road surfacings. The STYRELF success story has endured for 25 years with over 6 million metric tons sold. Some of the numerous benefits offered by STYRELF include:

• Elastic recovery from point loading
• Added strength meaning the asphalt mix is suitable for even the busiest roads
• Reduced tendency towards embrittlement at low temperatures
• Reduced tendency towards softening which can cause rutting deformation at high ambient temperatures
• Increased overall stiffness and improved load-spreading capacity

EVATECH is a plastomeric polymer modified bitumen offering some of the above benefits.

Polymer-modified bitumen products are predominantly used in surfacing coarse products such as stone mastic asphalt (SMA) and thin surfacings. STYRELF and EVATECH characteristics contribute to the structure of the asphalt to create quiet even road surfacing with a smooth ride quality; specialist application include:

• Mastic asphalts
• Enhanced modulus base materials
• Specialist asphalts for race tracks
• Blends for use in the carpet tile business, due to their flexibility and cohesion

KROMATIS - asphalt clear binder

The KROMATIS 'clear binder' enables asphalts to be produced with a range of high quality coloured surfacings. Benefits include:

• Aesthetics: a visual comfort improves users day-to-day life (pedestrian areas, bicycles lanes, approaches to galleries and museums)
• Safety: by improving tunnel lighting, road indication or lane identifications KROMATIS makes the road safer for every user
• Cost savings: clear surface dressings reduce public lighting costs

EMULSIS - bitumen water emulsions

EMULSIS MSS is used in 'micro surfacing' road maintenance which protects the road and increases skid-resistance through its elastomeric residual binder.

EMULSIS MG is used in recycling waste from demolition sites and utilities works. Processed at ambient temperatures, it is used for base materials in low category roads, footways and car parks.

EMULSIS NTC and NBC are used in road construction and surfacing overlays to bond layer interfaces within the road structure. These materials provide a waterproofing layer and improve the in-depth performance of the road.

LANTEX and NOVALASTIC - surface dressing emulsions

LANTEX and NOVALASTIC are TOTAL Bitumen's biggest volume emulsion materials. They are used for surface dressing, to add a layer of bitumen and chipping:

• Extremely cost effective
• Waterproof the road surface and protect sensitive structural layers from saturation
• Impart a significant texture to the road that aids skid resistance

MODULOTAL - high modulus bitumen

MODULOTAL is a high modulus range for use in road construction layers. It contributes to the lifespan of roads by using thinner layers than traditional construction materials. This in turn reduces use of finite materials.

Industry bitumens - AZALT, STELOX and COVREX

AZALT complies with BS EN 12591. These materials are mixed with specially graded aggregate at temperatures between 140°C and 170°C. STELOX is designed for numerous applications including roofing felt and carpet tile. COVREX is a range of very hard industrial bitumens used to make mastic asphalts. It includes:

• Industrial and domestic flooring and roofing
• Bitumen paints
• Electrical and sound insulation
