Gatsometer Continues Digital Success Down Under

02 November 2006

Gatsometer BV, the world's leading supplier of traffic enforcement systems, is delighted to announce the award of a further major contract in Australia.

The contract, with the Australian Capital Territory's Department of Territory and Municipal Services, is for the supply, installation and commissioning of fixed red light and speed digital camera systems and sees the replacement of previously-installed piezo-based systems.

The contract has been awarded to Gatsometer's representative in Australia, Aspect Traffic. Initially, several Gatso digital camera systems including GTC-D digital cameras and MCS multi-camera systems will be installed. As part of the contract with Aspect Traffic, the Australian Capital Territory is also conducting an evaluation of Gatso mobile Digital Radar Camera Systems (DRCS) to replace the portable laser-based systems it currently uses.

Announcing the contract award, the Director of Roads for Australian Capital Territory (ACT), Tony Gill, said "The expansion of the ACT traffic camera program reinforces the Government's commitment to safe and responsible driving."

The ACT's statement goes on to say that speed, combined with driver inattention, is one of the biggest killers on Australian roads, and that the use of speed cameras has been shown to positively modify the behaviour of speeding motorists. Camera locations in the ACT have a demonstrated history of road crashes and speeding offences.

The Gatso GTC-D will be used for combined speed and red light enforcement throughout the territory, at two-lane and three-lane sites. GTC-D utilises the patented GLD4-2S loop detector, which has been approved for use throughout the world, including the USA, the Netherlands and several other European countries.

The Gatso MCS multi-camera system is highly flexible and may be either gantry-mounted or installed at the roadside. It uses a combination of digital cameras to capture violations over up to five lanes of traffic, with digital colour images and optional video event recording if required. The Gatso MCS can capture front, rear or front-and-rear image sets of infringing vehicles. The Gatso MCS will also utilise the GLD4-2S detector, and it will also be used for combined speed and red light enforcement throughout the territory.

The Gatso DRCS has been developed exclusively for traffic use, in fixed, mobile or portable applications. It uses Gatso's Radar 24, a unique slotted wave antenna on a 24Ghz frequency, approved worldwide for enforcement applications. The system monitors both approaching and receding vehicles and also easily distinguishes between cars and trucks.

The advantage of the Gatso mobile system is that it monitors traffic in both directions simultaneously, reducing the manpower required for traffic enforcement.

Stephen Gateley, Managing Director of Aspect Traffic, comments, "Canberra is a strategic win for Aspect Traffic, in keeping with our goal for Gatsometer to become the number one supplier of speed and red light enforcement systems in Australia." He added, "We believe that Gatsometer's policy of offering a full range of fixed and mobile enforcement systems, coupled with Aspect Traffic's experience in installation and systems integration, gave us the edge in this contract. We were able to meet and exceed all the enforcement needs of the ACT Government."

This contract follows the recent award of a major enforcement camera project for Melbourne's Western Ring Road and the supply of additional cameras to the Queensland Government.

Timo Gatsonides, Managing Director of Gatsometer, says, "We were delighted to support Aspect Traffic throughout the tender process and are pleased to be awarded this further contract as part of a strong road safety initiative by the ACT Government. All Gatso enforcement systems - the GTC-D, the MCS and the DRCS - have been proven in use worldwide for their performance, accuracy and reliability."
