Speed Check Services - Speed Enforcement Systems

SPECS is the only Home Office Type Approved (HOTA) average speed enforcement system. Since 1999, Speed Check has supplied SPECS for route management solutions and road works enforcement. Distance over time or section control cameras allow speeds to be managed over long distances, providing a safer environment for drivers and road workers. These benefits can also be applied to 20mph zones, allowing driver behaviour to be monitored and controlled through a network of cameras.

The Highways Agency has approved an average speed check sign to be used at all appropriate SPECS sites. This results in excellent compliance, with very few drivers exceeding the posted speed limit when passing through an average speed enforcement zone.

The Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) based technology behind SPECS allows Speed Check to offer a range of integrated Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) solutions, including vehicle access control, clear zones and identification of a range of moving vehicle offences.

ROUTE MANAGEMENT SOLUTIONS

Spot speed cameras only address localised accident blackspots, but SPECS time over distance cameras give link-long compliance, controlling driver speeds over several kilometres. SPECS route management solutions are successfully being operated in English and Scottish locations, controlling driver speeds and significantly reducing fatalities and Killed and Seriously Injured (KSI) figures.

20MPH ZONES

SPECS time over distance cameras can be used to enforce 20mph zones, both as simple linear routes and across a network of interconnecting 20mph roads.

ROADWORKS ENFORCEMENT

Average speed cameras are increasingly used to enforce temporary speed limits within road works on the Highways Agency's network. Because the effect of section control cameras covers a large area, the entire works zone can be controlled, rather than just the specific camera location.

In addition, the stop-start braking behaviour associated with spot speed cameras is eliminated, giving smoother traffic flows, increased driver safety and improved journey reliability.

SPECS is Highways Agency approved for Temporary Automatic Cameras At Roadworks (TASCAR) enforcement and can be specified in Appendix 1/26.

ANPR BASED ITS SOLUTIONS

Using experience gained from the installation of SPECS, Speed Check is a turnkey integrator, offering consultancy, design, installation, implementation, and on going support for a range of ANPR based ITS solutions. This single supplier approach significantly reduces the complexity and risk associated when taking an ITS project from initial concept to roadside operation.

ITS solutions include speed enforcement, vehicle access control, clear zones traffic offence detection (over height, overweight etc), moving vehicle offences, journey delay advice, vehicle classification tools and more.
