COWI Road Engineering Consultancy

COWI is a leading international consulting group and specialist in road engineering. Our highly professional employees are committed to developing efficient and innovative solutions within multidisciplinary road and infrastructure projects.

COWI provides strong expertise within a wide range of road projects.

The COWI Group maintains 34 branch offices and affiliated offices in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas.

International road design

COWI’s specialised design team provides technically sound solutions, which are economically feasible and adapted to the specific conditions of the site. Our experience ranges from labour-based feeder roads in developing rural areas to multi-lane highways and motorways with complex interchanges and advanced service facilities. COWI uses the latest methods of computer-aided design (CAD), modelling, computerised animation and dynamic simulation presentations.

COWI is implementing road projects in many countries in various regions, such as Africa, the Middle East, Europe, Greenland and the Americas, and is therefore familiar with the technical challenges of road design in extreme climates.

Design and build contracts for roads and highways

COWI has broad experience working with contractors on design and build contracts. We have assisted in optimising designs and reducing costs through alternative and innovative solutions specially suited for each road project. COWI is used to the tight deadlines of modern contractors and can assist in optimising the planning of construction activities required for fast-track construction.
COWI’s latest design and build projects include highway and urban roads in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, for large international contractors.

Road design review

COWI carries out reviews of road designs made by other consultants in order to ensure compliance with the client’s specific requirements and/or national or international design codes applicable for the specific road project. We are experienced in checking the original designs and either confirming their viability or suggesting alternative solutions. With in-depth knowledge of international standards and codes, we are able to undertake services in most countries.

Depending on the services requested, design review is often used to suggest ways to save costs, optimise alignments, and decrease the construction period (value engineering). We are able to include such savings in the design.

Supervision of road construction projects

COWI performs supervision of road construction projects, ensuring compliance with the client’s technical and contractual requirements. We are used to working with different national and international regulations, such as FIDIC, and are experienced in ensuring the progress of road construction projects within the contractual terms.

Pavement design and sustainability

COWI designs pavements that meet the requirements of each specific load condition, from rubber-tyred vehicles moving at high speeds and forklifts with solid rubber wheels of high stiffness, to stationary loads, such as parked vehicles or stacked containers.

We combine state-of-the-art methodology and expertise to reach sustainable and cost-effective solutions for both normal and heavy-duty pavement design. We are dedicated to the utilisation of available technology and materials in order to suggest innovative solutions, while always observing environmental requirements.

Technical assistance

COWI provides technical assistance and capacity building to a variety of national and international road authorities. Over several decades we have assisted international road authorities with training, contractual understanding and organisation of the authorities. We can offer training and assistance in the preparation of tender documents, tender evaluations and contracting procedures. We also have experience in setting up project management systems, facilitating the monitoring of progress on site and costs.
