The Basyc motorcyclist protection system (MPS) is designed to improve motorcyclists' safety without compromising the safety of other road users. This innovative high-tensile mesh guardrail protection system reduces motorcyclist injuries and fatalities.
Developed in Spain and possessing exceptional elasticity, the Basyc MPS is a unique concept which controls and absorbs bodily impact against safety barriers, thereby affording motorcyclists greater protection in what would otherwise be injury-causing or fatal accidents.
Controlled elasticity enables Basyc to provide non-rigid continuous protection which cushions severe impacts. As collisions get closer to a post, this elasticity reduces progressively to avoid individuals impacting against a post (particularly smashing against uprights), while at the same time allowing for smoother braking. It also prevents a breach of the safety barrier.
Another remarkable feature of the Basyc system is its geotextile fabric, which propels the rider in a continuous forward direction, thereby avoiding the debilitating bounce effect.
Certified at the highest safety level for the occupants of 'out of control' vehicles (according to UNE-135900 and EN-1317), Basyc also protects the motorcyclists' companions or pillion passengers after guardrails have first been impacted by the drivers.
Another major advantage of Basyc is its non-rigid impact absorption mechanism. This ensures that after a collision it always returns to its original elasticity so replacement is never required; a problem common to metallic systems which become deformed by impact and require change of entire sections at considerable cost in time, manpower and material.
Completely fireproof, thanks to its superficial anti-friction treatment (under UNE 23723 regulation), the system avoids high temperatures produced by impact.
Basyc is not only suitable for all kinds of barriers and posts — CPN, IPN and tubular — but also non-sticky (making it very easy to eliminate any graffiti) and capable of being customised during manufacture with colours or logos.
Maintenance-free, Basyc adapts to any type of barrier, land contour or irregularity. Most importantly it is the only continuous-protection system on the market with no edges, corners or critical points, and covers the entire barrier from top to bottom.
Suitable for all road users and vehicles, Basyc reinforces the containment level of all conventional metallic barriers. Added to that, it is relatively cheap and easy to transport in bobbins, requiring only approximately 1.3m, making it far cheaper than metallic screens.
Easy to repair, the Basyc system is 100%-recyclable with a PVC coating for UV protection and has passed tests in all weather conditions.
"While crash barriers, or guardrails, provide enhanced safety for cars and trucks they have been the point of impact for 15% of motorcycle riders who died in single vehicle crashes in New South Wales," says Dane Hansen of LB International (the exclusive Australasian distributors).
"In Queensland, where the first Basyc installation is scheduled, motorcycle deaths increased 8.5% in the five years to 2007. Very often these deaths are the result of victims sliding along the road where posts act like blades. Direct impact against them at 30km/hr can cause massive injuries and, very often, fatalities."
After seven years' development, and a further two years' 'on the job' testing in Europe and South America, the first Basyc consignment is about to arrive in Australia. The Basyc MPS has also been selected by the University of Zaragoza in Aragon, Spain, for development of the European Project of Intelligent Systems of Protection for Motorcyclists.
