Quick Protection for Damaged Barrier in Wales

13 September 2007

BarrierGuard 800 has recently been deployed along a busy stretch of the M4 at High Cross in South Wales. BarrierGuard 800 steel safety barrier, specifically designed for use at road works on high speed roads, was required by Monmouthshire Direct Works as an emergency installation for protection of damaged central reserve safety fencing.

Two runs of 180m of BarrierGuard 800 were installed by Highway Care on both the eastbound and westbound carriageways within 12 hours from initial customer contact. Once on site, the installation was completed in less than two hours.

The W-beam between the two carriageways had been destroyed by an accident involving an articulated truck. The motorway could not be opened without a centre reserve safety barrier. With BarrierGuard 800 in place, the road was able to be reopened and provide positive protection to the workforce and passing motorists while the W-beam was replaced.

BarrierGuard 800's low deflection and high containment is demonstrated through it being the only temporary steel barrier in the world to have met the requirements of both EN1317 - 2 (containment levels N2 and H2) and NCHRP 350 (TL 4).
