Virginia DOT Districts See A Clear Future With Video Vehicle Detection

21 March 2006

Three Virginia DOT districts have surpassed the 150 video detection sensor milestone and see a bright future with the technology. The Culpeper, Salem and Lynchburg districts have successfully deployed AUTOSCOPE® SOLO PRO in over 50 signalized intersections for vehicle and incident detection.

In the Lynchburg district, where over 20 intersections of video detection have been interconnected, data and streaming video are transmitted back to the district transportation management office. Tim Smith, District ITS and Traffic Signal Director noted, "Video vehicle detection can be a powerful traffic management tool when the technology is deployed properly. We are extremely satisfied with its accuracy and performance."

Bob Yates, Salem District Traffic Engineer, embarked upon a replacement program of products that did not operate satisfactorily and is now implementing AUTOSCOPE in new signalized intersections. "We are pleased with the performance of video vehicle detection in our district. It has met and exceeded our expectations."

The Culpeper district is installing AUTOSCOPE SOLO PRO at existing intersections where loop based detection has degraded and also in new signalized intersections. Steve Robinson, Econolite's Virginia account manager noted "AUTOSCOPE's reputation for superior performance stands alone. With the addition of the programming wizard, setup and installation of AUTOSCOPE is a breeze. Coupled with Econolite's service and support, AUTOSCOPE SOLO PRO is the number one choice for video vehicle detection."
