HIGHWAY INFORMATION SYSTEMS: INTELLIZONE™ SMART TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Highway Information Systems' (HIS) Intellizone™ is a smart work zone traffic management system that is designed to automatically provide advance notice to motorists in real-time regarding traffic conditions ahead. With advance notice, motorists can be aware of estimated travel times, can avoid rear end collisions and can take alternate routes.

Intellizone™ is therefore a more efficient alternative to static warning signs, which often lack necessary information on what is happening in the work zone and which drivers frequently ignore. By providing real-time information to motorists, the system can help divert traffic, reduce sudden braking and motivate motorists to slow down when approaching the work zone.

Intellizone™ is NTCIP (National Transportation Communications for ITS Protocol) compliant, simplifying the integration of other manufacturers' field devices. After initial set-up the roadside Mobile Control Unit collects traffic data and automatically updates variable message signs and highway advisory radios with messages relating to traffic conditions in the work zone.

MOBILE / RADIO TRAFFIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS

HIS provides the following range of traffic communication products:

• HiWay Max - a fixed site, low power AM/FM radio station broadcasting up-to-the-minute messages over a range of approx. 4 miles to 8 miles; messages are selected from a pre-recorded library or remotely created from telephone or PC
• Solar Max - a mobile radio station with a typical range of 2 miles to 5 miles - with an environmentally safe solar system and a digital cellular telephone, this self-contained, portable unit can be set up and operational in 10mins
• Flash Max - flashing beacon systems, which are used to notify motorists of special conditions or emergency broadcasts; the beacons can be remotely activated and deactivated by telephone or computer
• DR2000 - central control software that simplifies control of the HiWay Max, Solar Max and Flash Max; optional features include text-to-speech, a web browser interface and an interface module for integration with third party software applications

SURFACE SYSTEMS, INC.: ROAD WEATHER INFORMATION SYSTEMS (RWIS)

Since its foundation in 1972, Surface Systems, Inc. (SSI) has become the predominant supplier of RWIS to North America's transport industry. RWIS technology provides vital information on pavement and weather conditions for highway maintenance and operations, increasing safety for the traveling public.

An RWIS system consists of multiple sites, each containing a suite of sensors that gather weather and pavement data and then report to a central location where authorized personnel can view that data. Sensors measure surface / air temperature, humidity, freeze point, wind speed and direction, form of moisture (snow / ice), precipitation, visibility, and amount of de-icing chemical present on the pavement surface.

WEATHER FORECASTING SERVICES AND ANTI-ICING SPRAY SYSTEMS
