Traffic Signals wins £20 Million Maintenance Contract

10 January 2006

Leading UK traffic signal systems business Traffic Signals UK Limited has won an intelligent traffic signals contract with Kent County Council (KCC) worth over £20 million.

The ten-year contract, which includes a five-year extension period, is worth around £2 million a year and work will start in the summer. Traffic Signals UK Ltd. will work in partnership with Ringway and Jacobs who will provide the highway maintenance and consultancy elements of the new highways contract.

This is the first of a new range of public private highways partnerships to be awarded in the UK planning to offer improved services, better value for money and enhanced levels of customer satisfaction. The contract was awarded after a very comprehensive process that had taken place over 18 months and involved companies responding to written questions, visits to other authorities, assessment of price, presentations and officer interviews, open book assessments of IT systems, collaborative workshop assessments and finally interviews.

TSUK have committed to significant changes to help Kent Highway Services improve delivery of the service. A key first step is a change to the single branding of Kent Highway Services, and a collaborative working partnership removing the traditional contractor or consultant tensions.

The contract covers a wide range of traffic signal work including: routine maintenance; emergency response; major replacement and new works.

Traffic Signals UK operates from 11 service and installation branches across the UK with key centres in Glasgow, Birmingham and London, with its industry leading Microsense products supplied from its site in Fareham. Products include traffic lights, detectors, pedestrian crossings, traffic controllers, traffic and bus information signs, and supporting computer controls, software and communications. The company employs over 200 people.

Gary Higgins, Managing Director, explained: “To secure the first major public private partnership contract of its kind in the UK is a fantastic achievement for our business, and continues our growth in market share taken from the traditional players.”

Richard Colley Chairman and CFO added: “A key part in the successful award of the contract was our reputation for the highest levels of service and a willingness to try new methods of collaborative working.”
