Weiss Electronic - Traffic Management Systems and Components

Modern traffic control installations for traffic management have become a necessity due to the increasing density of traffic - especially on motorways and at motorway junctions.

Weiss-Electronic is a successful manufacturer of traffic components and systems, operating worldwide. Weiss-Electronic specialises in sensor technology and electronic controls for traffic technology. For over 40 years, the company has been a competent partner in the development, production, installation and service of traffic management systems.

Weiss-Electronic’s traffic control installations aim to:

  • prevent accidents, increase safety and avoid traffic jams
  • improve and monitor traffic flow
  • acquire data for traffic control, statistics and content providers for traffic information
  • display information on variable message signs
  • provide information about route conditions, road constructions, travel time
  • facilitate enforcement installations

TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS

Numerous sensors (inductive loop detectors, radar detectors, video cameras, infrared detectors) collect traffic data. Vehicles are classified in 2, 5+1 or 8+1 types of vehicle and distance and speed classes. Other classifications are possible on request. Axle-load and environmental data can also be collected. The acquired data is forwarded to traffic management centres. All data is aggregated and transmitted to the sub-centres.

Within traffic management centres, Weiss-Electronic’s UZ2000 traffic- and tunnel-centre software analyses, archives and displays the collected data. From the collected raw data current traffic and environmental situations are being evaluated. Thus, lawful and traffic-technologically irreproachable switchings are generated and displayed on variable traffic signs, variable message signs or variable routing on the road.

RAMP METERING SYSTEM

Weiss-Electronic's ramp metering system is used to ensure smooth traffic flow on motorways. The signal light installation of the ramp metering system remains switched off as long as the traffic flows unhindered on the main road. Road stations monitor the traffic flow detected with traffic sensors. As soon as the traffic density on the main road or the ramps reaches a threshold value, the ramp metering installation is activated.

Since 2001 Weiss-Electronic GmbH has set up 73 ramp metering installations in Germany.

TUNNEL MANAGEMENT

Weiss-Electronic has increasingly been involved in traffic management projects in tunnels. The aim is to increase safety. This is realised by continuous monitoring of the traffic situation on all lanes, lay-bys and by quick detection of incidents (accidents, stationary cars or smoke and fire), as well as immediate reactions to emergency alerts from the tunnel control centre.
