In response to a number of high profile terrorist attacks in the UK in the early 1990’s, Racal Research was briefed by the UK Government to develop a high performance licence plate recognition (ANPR) system to be used in all weathers, visibilities and at high speeds.

The system was designed to assist in the prevention of terrorist attacks and to deny terrorists the use of the road.
