Term: Tunnel Boring Machines
Definition:
Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) are used to excavate tunnels by drilling the tunnel face to full size with a circular cross section through a variety of ground types. They are steerable, have a rotary cutting head, produce a smooth tunnel surface and have little detrimental effect on the surrounding geology.
