The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) in the US is set to close multiple ramps to and from Interstate 10 (I-10) for redesigning and reconfiguration works that will be completed over the next several months.

The reconfiguring works will lead to an interchange connecting to the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway, which is scheduled to open late next year.

Developed as an alternative to I-10 through downtown Phoenix, the South Mountain Freeway will provide a direct link between the East Valley and West Valley regions.

At the place of the ramps, ADOT along with the developer Connect 202 Partners will build new roadways parallel to I-10 that will connect the 51st and 67th avenues and permanently replace freeway access at 59th Avenue.

Under the project, the first ramp closure is scheduled from the last week of this month.

The construction of new access roads is expected to be completed over the next nine months and will also change the way drivers access I-10 between 51st and 67th avenues.

In addition to the access road, the drivers will have dedicated on and off ramps at 67th Avenue.

Motorists who intend to access the freeway in this area will use the new two-mile-long roadways to access local streets, similar to the I-10 stretch between 91st and 107th avenues.

Due to the project works, the transport authority plans to close I-10 during the weekend and close the ramps for the long term.

For each I-10 ramp, the closure period is expected to continue for 30 to 60 days.
