Toyota (TMC), a Japan-based automotive manufacturing company, intends to establish a new firm named Toyota Research Institute-Advanced Development (TRI-AD) for the development of autonomous driving solutions.

The new ¥300bn ($2.84bn) firm will conduct research on self-driving solutions, as well as develop automated driving software in collaboration with Aisin Seiki and Denso Corporation (Denso).

TRI-AD will recruit approximately 1,000 employees through lateral movements from affiliate firms and new recruits.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has agreed to provide a $44m loan for the refurbishment of 58km-long road network between Baucau and Viqueque in Timor-Leste.

The $44m funding includes a $19m regular loan and a $25m concessional loan.

The upgraded roadway between Baucau and Viqueque will offer better access to schools, hospitals and other public facilities in the area.

It is further expected to facilitate the development of agricultural sector and tourism in southern Timor-Leste.

Harman International, a wholly owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, intends to collaborate with Groupe PSA for the development of cybersecurity solutions for autonomous and next-generation vehicle network architecture.

The developed solutions will be deployed on Groupe PSA’s autonomous vehicle platform.

The collaboration will develop a fully fledged cybersecurity solution to detect potential threats to advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and other autonomous vehicle frameworks.

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDoT) has awarded an $18m contract to Ralph L Wadsworth Construction Company (RLW) for widening the western stretch of the I-80 highway.

The expansion works include construction of a 4.13km-long (2.57mi) passing lane on the highway between Jeremy Ranch and Summit Park.

The new lane is expected to enhance safety and traffic flow in the region.

The Tanzania Government has received a ¥3.782bn ($35m) grant from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for the second phase of its road widening project in Dar es Salaam.

The project includes the conversion of a two-lane road between Morocco and Mwenge into a four-lane road. The proposed 4.3km-long stretch is a part of New Bagamoyo road.

The extension project is expected to resolve traffic issues and increase the average vehicle speed.
