Transurban has been awarded a contract worth A$6.7bn ($5.07bn) by the Government of Victoria, Australia, for the construction of a six-lane tunnel named West Gate Tunnel, which aims to remove the congestion along the M1 corridor from Pakenham to Geelong.

The new tunnel is expected to be completed by 2022 and will serve as an alternative to the West Gate Bridge. It will be used by trucks for operation on the residential streets in the inner west.

Transurban has selected CPB Contractors and John Holland as the construction subcontractors for the project. The two subcontractors are expected to start the construction work on the northern tunnel portal from next month.

A joint venture (JV) consisting of HDR Engineering and Alta Vista Solutions has been awarded a $50m contract by the US Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

The contractual scope includes provision of technical services and research support under the Long-Term Bridge Performance (LTBP) programme, a 20-year programme that aims to assimilate the data on performance of bridges in the US. The programme also aims to enhance deterioration prediction modelling and capital expenditure decision-making of the bridges.

The JV will gather field data using FHWA’s Robotics-Assisted Bridge Inspection Tool (RABIT) and modern non-destructive evaluation and testing techniques. Further, it will conduct conventional bridge inspection to collect the data.
