Iteris, a US-based firm that offers applied informatics for the transportation industry, has secured a contract from City of Abilene, Texas, to upgrade traffic-signal infrastructure.

As per the $1.5m contract, Iteris will replace the existing traffic-signal infrastructure at 63 intersections across the city with new equipment, including a wireless broadband-radio communications system.

The new system will provide faster communications throughout Abilene and allow city traffic technicians to respond to problems remotely, thereby minimising transport costs. The technicians will be able to resolve issues more quickly, as well as improve the safety of commuters in the region.

Iteris Roadway Sensors senior vice-president and general manager Todd Kreter said: “Iteris is pleased to continue to provide design, construction and integration solutions for the City of Abilene.

Additionally, Iteris will provide its advanced vehicle detection systems including VantageNext and Vantage Vector, a hybrid detection system that utilises video and radar.

The US-based firm will also upgrade wireless broadband radio communications network across the city, as well as traffic signal controllers and Ethernet switches that allow wireless communications to be shared by all of the hardware systems.
