Plans for a new bridge over the River Mersey in Halton, England, have been submitted to the government’s spending review by the local council.

Halton Borough Council’s Mersey Gateway project includes a proposal to build a six-lane toll bridge between Runcorn and Widnes.

The plan also aims to develop and integrate public transport, cycle and pedestrian links across Halton as part of a 20-year regeneration programme for the region.

The plan is expected to be reviewed by the government next month, according to planningresource.co.uk.

Several business leaders have backed the scheme and said the bridge is a critical infrastructure link for the region.

The Mersey Gateway project was delayed by the coalition government in June, along with all transport schemes in the planning process across England.
