UK-based public and regulated services provider Amey is investing in a new fleet technology that aims to make drivers more aware of cyclists and pedestrians.

The Cycle Safety Shield has been developed by Safety Shield Systems using technology created by Israeli firm Mobileye.

Cycle Safety Shield comes with cameras and multivision sensors, which serve as a third eye for drivers and monitor blind spots around the vehicle.

"Amey is committed to ensuring public and employee safety, and we’re always looking at new ways to continue delivering our services as safely as possible."

These sensors provide real-time visual and audible updates to drivers, which help them to stay alert and avoid collisions.

Amey has invested approximately £1m for installing the technology in its fleet.

The system will be deployed in more than 100 refuse collection vehicles in London.

Amey chief executive Mel Ewell said: "Amey is committed to ensuring public and employee safety, and we’re always looking at new ways to continue delivering our services as safely as possible.

"Working with our suppliers to roll out the Cycle Safety Shield system across our fleet, is another example of where we have gone above and beyond to help improve road safety in London and across the communities in which we work."

Once the rollout is complete, Amey will have deployed this technology in its 200 vehicles, thereby making it one of the largest fleets in the UK to be equipped with the advanced system.

Mobileye aftermarket division director of business development Iain Levy said: "Our technology is currently being piloted across the globe in the US, Germany, China, Japan and Australia. However, this fleet-wide rollout positions London as global pioneers in the adoption of lifesaving advanced driver assistance technology, and we hope that other cities continue to follow its lead."

Safety Shield Systems is the exclusive UK provider of Cycle Safety Shield.

Safety Shield Systems director Jon Guest said: "Amey has decided to install the system across their fleet to help protect vulnerable road users.

"Amey will have one of the largest fleets in the UK fitted with the most advanced lifesaving technology available."

In addition to the Cycle Safety Shield system, Amey has equipped its vehicles with several custom features to bolster visibility on road network, which comprise a 360° camera system with complete recording facility, additional amber beacons that provide all-round visibility to road users, as well as LED warning signs and an audible external warning, which can be activated when left-hand indicator is in use.

Amey is a UK public and regulated services provider with more than 21,000 employees.
