Ashghal opens first phase of Olympic Intersection in Qatar

Qatar’s Public Works Authority Ashghal has officially opened the first phase of the Olympic Intersection project, which included converting a major roundabout into a signal-controlled intersection.

Works covered in this phase include the opening of three lanes in each direction at the intersection, installation of traffic signals, as well as drainage network, and renewing deteriorating utilities’ pipes.

Ashghal plans to open the second phase of the Olympic Intersection in October, featuring the introduction of a new traffic signal that provides three lanes to turn left, in addition to a lane specifically for U-turns.

The authority said that the opening of the first phase will not make any significant difference to the traffic flow. However, Ashghal expects this to improve once the project's second phase is complete.

Project works were carried out in two phases, with the opening of the first phase necessary to enable Ashghal to work on the second stage.

Conversion of Olympic Roundabout into a signal-controlled intersection is part of the third phase of Al Rayyan Street development project.

Project works include developing and widening of three intersections, which include Olympic Intersection, Al Shura Council Intersection, and Ahmad bin Ali Intersection, also known as Bin Omran Intersection.

The full project is scheduled to be completed by August next year.
