The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai, UAE, has introduced a new app, Smart Drive, which helps drivers navigate easily through traffic.

Launched at Dubai Gitex 2014, the Smart Drive app uses GPS technology to guide drivers on roads.

RTA Traffic & Roads Agency CEO Engineer Maitha bin Udai said: "It has now become possible for road users to have vital and accurate traffic information about Emirate of Dubai in a clear manner in order to choose alternative roads in case of traffic congestions in certain spots.

"They can also be intimated instantly about the traffic condition of roads so as to avoid traffic accidents or other road surprises."

The app also allows users to share and send the routes of their journeys and details through e-mail or SMS, Facebook and WhatsApp.

Udai added: "This app is quite important and the need for it prompted its launch in a contribution towards the smart city as it helps curb traffic congestion by saving time and effort when used by motorists to reach their destinations by driving through shortcuts and alternative roads.

"This app is quite important and the need for it prompted its launch in a contribution towards the smart city."

"They can also know the stops in the Emirate of Dubai when approaching destinations. Voice commands are also available in both Arabic and English languages accompanying the navigation system."

The RTA has made the app available at Google Play and Apple Store.

Udai added: "The Smart Drive app is being updated quarterly with recent maps of vital locations in the UAE in general, without having to get internet connection, such as Dubai landmarks or familiar sites nearby the position of the app users by selecting one of map display features whether in 2D or 3D.

"Some services in the app require internet connectivity such as obtaining real-time traffic information in Dubai roads or reporting the road condition of roads in the Emirate."
