Infrastructure contractor Flatiron and its joint venture (JV) partner Zachry Construction have secured a $231m contract from the South Carolina Department of Transportation to reconfigure the Interstate 85/Interstate 385 interchange in Greenville, South Carolina, US.

The reconfiguration will improve daily traffic operations and safety for 194,000 vehicles.

Under the deal, the JV will replace existing loop ramps with direct-connect, high-level flyover bridges, as well as build additional lanes and a new collector-distributor road along the I-85 and I-385.

"We look forward to successfully completing this vital project as we continue to expand our presence in the region."

In addition, they will design and construct 12 new bridges, renovate two existing bridges and construct retaining walls.

Flatiron chief operating officer and civil division head Javier Sevilla said: "This is the third major transportation infrastructure project Flatiron has secured in the south-east in the past year.

"We look forward to successfully completing this vital project as we continue to expand our presence in the region."

The project is being designed by a team led by Civil Engineering Consultant Services, Stantec, TYLin and Mead and Hunt.

Construction work is scheduled to start in late 2015 and complete in 2018.

Both Flatiron and Zachary have independently developed major projects in South Carolina and the south-east.

Flatiron built the Arthur Ravenel Bridge over the Cooper River in Charleston and the Carolina Bays Parkway in Myrtle Beach, whereas Zachary built the I-20 widening project in Richland County and is currently working on I-40/I-77 in Iredell County, North Carolina.
