Highways England (HE) has unveiled details of a £75m project that aims to transform the busy trunk road junction in North Tyneside, UK, into a triple-deck roundabout plan.

Under the plan, a joint venture between Sisk and Lagan will lower the A19 beneath the current A1058 coast road and roundabout, which will ease congestion and enhance the reliability of journeys along the route.

The scheme covers the main route to and from the Tyne Tunnel, and is designed so that commuters along the A19 can use a new road section that will run under the current junction, without entering the roundabout.

"This scheme will improve journey times on the A19 by reducing congestion and improving safety for the thousands of drivers that use this junction each day."

Part of the government’s five-year £15bn roads investment programme, the improvements are meant to support opportunities and economic growth in the northeast under the Northern Powerhouse initiative.

The main construction work will begin later this year.

A two day public exhibition will be held before the construction work begins.

Highways England project manager Julie Alexander said: "Once complete, this scheme will improve journey times on the A19 by reducing congestion and improving safety for the thousands of drivers that use this junction each day as well as cyclists and pedestrians."
