National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced its plan to construct a 50,000km road network over a period of up to six years with a $250bn investment.

Work has already started to create a detailed report on road projects covering 7,000km.

Chandra was quoted by The Telegraph as saying: "I am confident that the NHAI alone will be able to take up 25,000km of road projects in the next five years through its various programmes such as Bharat Mala, National Highways Development Project, Seth Bharatam Pariyojana and District Connectivity."

"I am confident that the NHAI alone will be able to take up 25,000km of road projects in the next five years."

Approximately 240 road projects are already at their various stages of development and implementation under NHAI.

Chandra was quoted by Business Standard as saying: "We want the private sector to partner us to achieve this target. It is a stupendous job and private partnership is critical.

"We want private sector assistance not only for funding, but also to bring in new technology and innovation in design and also their competency in management of these roads."

The Indian government has taken several measures to revive the road sector and solve the issues of the private sector.

Chandra told The Telegraph: "The most critical issue of land has now been addressed by the government.

"It has now been decided that 80% of the land should be available with the authority before awarding a project. This will be a game-changer for the sector."

In 2016, NHAI has already purchased 9,000ha of land with an Rs200bn ($2.92bn) investment.

NHAI aims to award 10,000km of road projects this fiscal year, while 6,353km of projects have already been awarded last month.
