India plans to introduce electronic toll collection system

30 November 2011

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is planning to replace manual toll collections at plazas with electronic toll collection (ETC) systems across the country.

The ETC system will be based on radio frequency identification (RFID), which will be complemented by a wireless on-board unit (OBU) on a vehicle, as well as a stationery roadside unit (RSU) at the toll plaza.

The RSU can verify an OBU on a vehicle running at a speed of 50km an hour, and the OBU will be compatible to all toll plazas in India.

The new system will allow toll deduction from the pre-paid account of the customers, while the accounts with zero balance will raise an alarm to notify officials.

According to CRISIL research, there are nearly 525 toll plazas in India, passed by around 20,000 vehicles every day, each spending five to ten minutes in queue.

CRISIL said the new toll collection system will eliminate the waiting time and save fuel worth Rs10bn ($190.8m) a year, as well as reduce the loss on toll leakages.

The new system will also be introduced at the six toll plazas in Bengal, which will be implemented by private companies, according to timesofindia.indiatimes.com.
