India is working on the construction of a 1,400km highway that will connect the country with its Southeast Asian neighbours, Thailand and Myanmar by land.

This road is also expected to bolster trade between the three countries.

Currently, India is funding the renovation of 73 bridges that were constructed during World War II.

"There has always been a meeting of minds between India and Thailand."

Renovation work will be completed in 18 months.

The planned highway will start from Moreh in the eastern region of India to Tamu city in Myanmar.

Currently, talks are on to conclude a tri-nation motor vehicle agreement to use the 1,400km road, which will touch Thailand at Tak in Mae Sot district.

Indian Ambassador to Thailand Bhagwant Singh Bishnoi was quoted by PTI as saying: "There has always been a meeting of minds between India and Thailand.

"Our two countries share cultural, spiritual and linguistic links.

"With this road we will also have physical connectivity."

This road will help in transportation of goods, which will provide boost to small and medium enterprises in the north eastern part of India.

The highway will be part of India's Act East policy.

In 2015, Thai-Indian trade touched $8bn. Last year, over a million Indian tourists visited Thailand.
