Spanish infrastructure company Indra has developed the world’s largest toll system project with a cost of €38m.

The firm has implemented its remote toll system technology for a complete public highway network in Mexico.

The highway network is managed by the public company Caminos y Puentes Federales (Capufe), and comprises almost 500 lanes totalling up to 4,000km.

"The company will provide a new remote toll system and telecommunications equipment, as well as subsystems for billing, communications, customer service and back office systems."

Over a four-year period, Indra will perform system maintenance on the network, which includes around 45% of the country’s highways.

The company will provide a new remote toll system and telecommunications equipment, as well as subsystems for billing, communications, customer service and back office systems.

Subsystems for billing enable management of collections and transactions.

The remote toll system will allow users to pay without stopping, using the TAG electronic device installed in their vehicles.

An interoperability system will also enable the connection of different electronic payment programmes in Mexico so that drivers may pass through any toll booth, irrespective of TAG brand.
