US-based Iteris has secured a contract for the I-405 Improvement Project to provide technological solutions to ease commuting times for 370,000 drivers in southern California.

The company’s initial work on the project involving infrastructure design started in March and is expected to run through next year.

Iteris Transportation Systems general manager and senior vice-president Ramin Massoumi said: "This iconic project brings together the best practices for project design and delivery for smarter mobility.

"The ITS design incorporates leading technologies to ensure the safety of motorists, simplified traffic management and improved travel times."

The I-405 Improvement Project is being carried out with an investment of more than $1bn and is undertaken by Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) in cooperation with Caltrans.

"The ITS design incorporates leading technologies to ensure the safety of motorists, simplified traffic management and improved travel times."

Under the $5.5m contract, Iteris will be responsible for the freeway intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and Express Lane infrastructure design, as well as temporary ITS infrastructure during construction.

In addition, the company will develop a project traffic management plan, and provide signal design services at 42 intersections throughout the corridor.

Furthermore, Iteris will design various other elements on the ITS and Express Lanes elements, which include changeable message signs, CCTV cameras, vehicle detection, ramp metering, and communications networks for both ITS and the Express Lanes.

The I-405 Improvement Project will see the addition of two general purpose lanes and two tolled express lanes.
