Iteris, a provider of applied informatics for transportation and agriculture, has unveiled its PedTrax computer vision technology for pedestrian measurement.

The technology was launched at the ITE 2016 Annual Meeting, held from 14 to 17 August in Anaheim, California.

With the launch of PedTrax, Iteris has added new pedestrian measurement capabilities to its advanced video detection platform, which already comes with SmartCycle, a bicycle detection and differentiation feature.

"Iteris engineers designed this new PedTrax computer vision technology for automated pedestrian measurement at intersections to improve safety and mobility without the need for new equipment installation."

This technology automates measurement of both the count, direction and speed of pedestrians in crosswalks. This information offers insights on levels of street life.

Iteris roadway sensors senior vice president and general manager Todd Kreter said: "Complete Streets embrace active transportation modes including walking and cycling, and their management is more effective with a performance-based approach for street measurements.

"As cities look at our streets from the view of everyone who actually uses them, getting an accurate and comprehensive view of pedestrian activity can be difficult, costly and time-consuming.

“Iteris engineers designed this new PedTrax computer vision technology for automated pedestrian measurement at intersections to improve safety and mobility without the need for new equipment installation.”

With the help of PedTrax technology, transportation officials and professionals can make cities safer for pedestrians with better-informed decisions based on foot traffic volume, direction and speed to optimise intersection signal timing.

They can make proactive improvements to signage and striping, intersection design, overpass locations, school crossing guard deployment, and even economic development programmes.

Automated counting of the number and speed of pedestrians offers better on-screen reporting in traffic control centres.

PedTrax offers current data for grant applications and performance monitoring down-to-the-minute level in addition to seasonal trends in pedestrian traffic patterns.

Along with SmartCycle, the data and analytics supplied by PedTrax can enable agencies where roadway operations can be made pedestrian- or bicycle-friendly.
