Jacobs Engineering has been contracted by the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) to provide construction inspection services for its Smart Moves 2015 – North programme, designed to provide commuter traffic and alert services.

Smart Moves 2015 – North programme work includes the installation of a camera surveillance system on Interstate-78, installation of a dynamic message system on Route 23, and two truck safety warning systems.

As per the terms of the contract, Jacobs Engineering will oversee inspection work in the City of Newark, the townships of Clinton, Parsippany – Troy Hills, and West Milford, and the counties of Essex, Hunterdon, Morris, and Passaic, New Jersey.

"The Smart Moves programme is utilising the latest technology to provide an effective traffic information and alert service for commuters."

Jacobs senior vice-president buildings and infrastructure Randy Pierce said: “The Smart Moves programme is utilising the latest technology to provide an effective traffic information and alert service for commuters.

“We look forward to contributing our expertise to this important project, which is built on many years of experience in developing transport infrastructure networks and related systems around the world.”

The NJDOT’s Smart Moves programme seeks to develop, implement and promote alternative business and commuter travel options and intermodal connections.

By using information provided by the network of cameras the programme will identify incidents and deploy emergency services to alert motorists of changes in the driving patterns.

The project commenced in October this year and is expected to be complete by March 2018.
