A19/A1058 Coast Road

A joint venture of John Sisk & Son and Lagan Construction Group has received a contract to perform upgrades to the A19/A1058 Coast Road junction in North Tyneside, UK.

The £40m contract is a part of a record £15bn investment by the UK Government for road improvements over the next six years.

UK Roads Minister Andrew Jones said: "Through schemes like these, we are building the Northern Powerhouse and creating opportunities for hardworking people across the UK.

"It will make journeys better for local people ensuring they have easy access to jobs, shops and leisure facilities nearby."

"Through schemes like these, we are building the Northern Powerhouse and creating opportunities for hardworking people across the UK."

Highways England assistant project manager Darlene Procter said: "This scheme will improve journey times on the A19 by reducing congestion and improving safety for the thousands of drivers that use this junction each day.

"Providing better infrastructure will help the local and national economy, helping to support businesses and creating jobs."

The plan envisions upgrading the existing grade separated roundabout to a three level interchange, placing the A19 in an open cut underpass and replacing the current embankment and adjacent bridges across the roundabout.

The upgrade is also expected to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists by providing two new shared use bridges over the A1058 slip roads.

Work under the contract is scheduled to start in 2016, with an estimated completion date of mid-2018.

The A19 is a vital strategic link providing access to the Tyne Tunnel Trading Estate, Silverlink Retail Park, Cobalt Business Park and South East Northumberland in the UK.
