Kuwait has signed a KD169m ($584m) contract to design, build and maintain the Doha link of Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah Causeway.

The Doha link will be carried out by a Korean company and this part will be completed over four years, which will coincide with the completion of the main causeway.

Kuwait’s Minister of Public Works Abdulaziz Al-Ibrahim said that the causeway will link southern and northern Kuwait while also accommodating the traffic over the next three decades.

"The causeway will link southern and northern Kuwait while also accommodating the traffic over the next three decades."

The Kuwait News Agency stated that the contract features two elements, one of which is the currently under-construction causeway that will link the Shuwaikh Port area and the Subiyah New Town area to the north. Out of the 36km, 27km is marine bridge structure.

The second element is the Doha link, which will connect the Shuwaikh Port with the Doha motorway. This is a marine bridge structure and will be 13km long.

The causeway will be a combination of low-level bridge, embankments and transition islands. A main bridge will span the navigation channel and a free flow interchange at the Shuwaikh Port will help in connecting the causeway to the main road network in Kuwait city.

The minister further noted that the Doha Link project will have a developed monitoring system for the structure and relevant services including traffic control. It will also include a truck weigh station.

A number of projects costing approximately KD11bn ($38bn) will be announced by the government by mid-2015.
