The Government of Ontario is planning to widen a 10km stretch of Highway 400 by adding more lanes from Major Mackenzie Drive in Vaughan to King Road in King township.

For this project, the Ontario Government is investing C$89.9m ($67.5m) and expects the highway expansion project to create nearly 630 construction jobs.

The project works include widening of Highway 400 from six lanes to eight lanes, as well as the inclusion of a high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane in each direction.

On an average, Highway 400 is used by nearly 122,500 vehicles on a day to day basis.

Ontario Minister of Transportation Steven Del Duca said: “Improving our highway infrastructure is vital to Ontario’s economy.

"Adding new lanes will help keep traffic moving so that businesses can continue to operate and people get where they need to be sooner."

“This stretch of highway is already very busy for residents and businesses. Adding new lanes will help keep traffic moving so that businesses can continue to operate and people get where they need to be sooner.”

Ontario authority has committed C$2.1bn ($1.57bn) for repair and expand provincial highways and bridges across the province.

Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Oak Ridges-Markham Helena Jaczek said: "I am proud that the provincial government continues to invest in much-needed infrastructure improvements in York Region.

"Widening Highway 400 and adding HOV lanes will improve travel times for families, commuters and businesses in Oak Ridges-Markham."
