The US Federal Highway Administration has granted $720,000 to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) to install an adaptive traffic signal system at 11 intersections of McKnight Road in the North Hills.

The system will communicate with equipment at other intersections by monitoring traffic flow and continuously making adjustments to signal timing to increase flow.

With plans to install ten traffic cameras along McKnight in Ross and McCandless, PennDOT further considers connecting the technology to its Regional Transportation Management Center located in Collier.

"An additional $640,000 in federal funding has been earmarked by PennDOT to install the cameras and add message signs."

PennDOT also announced another project to add variable message sign at the road.

PennDOT district traffic engineer Todd Kravits told Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that all of the new features will be installed by the end of 2016.

Kravits added that the project may not cause any traffic restrictions.

An additional $640,000 in federal funding has been earmarked by PennDOT to install the cameras and add message signs.

Evergreen Road, West View Avenue, Nelson Run Road, Babcock Boulevard, Siebert Road, Patrick Place, Ross Park Mall Drive, Johnanna Drive and Peebles Road will see the installation of these cameras.

Adaptive signals will be placed at intersections, including Nelson Run Road, at the Red Lobster restaurant, Braunlich Drive, North Hills Village, Siebert Road, Patrick Place, Ross Park Mall Drive / McKnight Circle, Browns Lane / Johnanna Drive, McIntyre Road / Northway Mall Drive, Peebles Road and Perrymont Road / Babcock Boulevard.
