A report from William C Hockin Transport has claimed that drivers of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) are the best road users, with cyclists needing to improve the most.

According to William C Hockin Transport director Bill Hockin, untrained cyclists present the most hazards and require mandatory training.

In an example given, cyclists sometimes decide to pass even if a 44t lorry is indicating left.

"Hockin warned that too many people do not possess enough knowledge of how to stay safe and were taking to the roads."

Appreciating cycling as good for health and the environment, Hockin warned that too many people do not possess enough knowledge of how to stay safe and were taking to the roads.

In an interview with the North Devon Journal, Hockin said that there are going to be casualties if no action is taken with regard to this.

Hockin said: "My drivers are well-trained, professional men, but there’s only so much they can do."

He also noted that it is not currently mandatory for cyclists to possess licence plates or any other alternatives so that they can be identified on the road.

Established in 1974, William C Hockin Transport has a fleet of vehicles comprising 44t tautliners, flatbed trailers, tankers and vans.

Many of the company’s lorries comply with Transport for London’s low-emissions standards.
