Siemens and Duisburger Hafen have entered into an agreement to jointly develop new concepts for improving traffic in multimodal transportation hubs.

According to Siemens, its intelligent truck supply management system ‘Integrated Truck Guidance’ (ITG) forms an important basis for using existing infrastructure more efficiently.

Under the deal, the two parties will gradually introduce intelligent flow control system as a pilot project at the Port of Duisburg.

The system will be responsible for recording truck data and rendering the information as anonymous, bundling the information with regional real-time traffic data such as travel times, traffic situations and disruptions and then forward them to mobile devices and LED traffic information boards.

"The strategic cooperation with Siemens provides us with an opportunity to optimise the efficiency of traffic flows at logistics hubs."

It would help incoming truck drivers as they would already have access to all important traffic information required for coordinated and rapid travel to the next free loading area or terminal.

Duisburger Hafen CEO Erich Staake said: "The strategic cooperation with Siemens provides us with an opportunity to optimise the efficiency of traffic flows at logistics hubs.

"This constitutes an important approach towards eliminating future bottlenecks, and also creates new capacities. With our combined technical and logistics know-how, we will be able to increase the efficiency of any logistics hub in the world in the long term."

In addition, the pilot project will also be extended to other transport carriers like trains and inland water vessels.

The company said that the integration of IT systems will also be used for timely communication between stakeholders and to improve general traffic flows, both into the hinterland and in the direction of the sea ports.
