Roads and Maritime Services (RMS), a New South Wales government agency in Australia, has announced the installation of a 31tonne bridge girder as part of stage 2 of the Narellan Road upgrade project.

The upgrade, which is designed to reduce traffic congestion, improve safety and travel times, has been provided with funds of A$114m ($87.7m) by the governments of Australia and NSW.

RMS spokesperson said: “Narellan Road is a key road transport corridor servicing south western Sydney and this upgrade is necessary to ensure traffic keeps moving as the area grows.

“New lanes are being built and the existing bridge across the Hume Motorway is being widened to create three lanes in each direction.

“The bridge girder is one of three to be installed at the Narellan Road bridge across the Hume Motorway at Campbelltown.”

The girder installed is around 21m long, and once the final girder is installed, the construction company will be focus on the construction of concrete deck, as well as installation of safety barriers along the road.

The stage 2 works began in January last year and is expected to be complete by mid-2018.

RMS has been undertaking work on sections of work on Narellan Road during 2012.

The upgrade works for Narellan Road began in 2012, and are being carried out by RMS.
