The Nottinghamshire County Council in the UK has awarded a highways maintenance contract extension to sustainable building materials and construction solutions company, Tarmac.

Under the £12m contract extension, the company will deliver a range of highways maintenance works, including road resurfacing, gully cleaning, street lighting, as well as road marking and earthworks.

The company received the original contract in April 2013 for an initial period of five years, with the possibility of three additional extensions to March 2023.

The latest award follows successful delivery of a number of significant projects, and extends the contract to April 2020.

Tarmac Contracting business managing director Paul Fleetham said: "This is a real testament to the successful collaborative partnership with our colleagues at the Council to maintain a first-rate road network, whilst delivering significant annual cost savings, supporting the local economy by working with local supply chain partners, and securing jobs with the county."

"Our partnership with Tarmac has helped us to create a more resilient transport system and better roads."

Nottinghamshire County Council contracts and programmes manager Martin Carnaffin said: "Our partnership with Tarmac has helped us to create a more resilient transport system and better roads by driving efficiencies and improvements.

"We have worked extensively to invest in our teams and resources to ensure that Nottinghamshire’s road infrastructure, which is vital to delivering ongoing economic growth, is managed and maintained to a high standard for road users, whilst delivering value for taxpayers."

The contract also includes a commitment from the company to support and invest in the local economy, delivering 90% of the work using domestic workforce and suppliers.

Since 2013, the partnership between Tarmac and the council has delivered more than £2m in annual cost savings, which in turn have been reinvested into other local road improvement initiatives, such as maintenance, additional drainage works and other highway schemes.

In addition, the collaboration has helped to create jobs and deliver joint training and development initiatives with the local authority’s highways design engineers.
