The Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) in Thailand has introduced a new intelligent transport technology project in order to improve the country’s traffic and transportation system.

As part of the new project, Smart Thailand via Intelligent Transport System Empowered by MOST, all cars in the country will be deployed with sensors that will transfer real-time location data to the control centre at the Ministry of Transport.

This information will be analysed and combined with data from the CCTV network, and the combined data will then be interpreted and processed before being transmitted to both the traffic police and commuters.

The data will be transmitted in the form of reports through in-car navigation devices or cell phone apps.

MOST Minister Worawat Uea-Apinyakul said that many intelligent transport systems (ITS) proved to be effective in solving traffic problems, reducing number of accidents, and helping preserve the environment in various countries.

“The data will be transmitted in the form of reports through in-car navigation devices or cell phone apps.”

The current technology facilitates traffic management, reduces costs, and provides travellers with information about the most congested areas and the areas they should avoid, which will in turn help them plan their journeys more efficiently, the minister said.

MOST is planning to adopt the ITS and collaborate works with related agencies.

The installation of the new system will begin in Bangkok and is expected to commence in the next six months.

This new system will be fully implemented across the country by 2015.

The project has been announced by minister Uea-Apinyakul and various representatives from the Thai Traffic Police as well as the Department of Land Transport.
