TomTom integrates Real-Time Maps into its NavKit navigation software in order to provide up-to-date, personalised maps to motorists.

The use of Real-Time Maps will enable NavKit to receive the latest map updates and additional geographical locations.

Based on the navigation data standard (NDS) format, Real-Time Maps has been positioned as the world’s first transactional mapmaking platform.

With the transit of TomTom’s NavKit navigation software to NDS platform, the Dutch company makes it easy for car manufacturers to deliver the latest maps and navigation software to motorists worldwide.

"Incorporating Real-Time Maps in our core navigation software firmly establishes TomTom as one of the leading technology providers."

Using the standard, carmakers can have better flexibility when choosing map suppliers and configurability of geo-coverage to maximise storage usage.

TomTom CEO Harold Goddijn said: "The challenge for today’s automotive industry is to create navigation and automated driving systems that are cost-effective and future-proof.

"Incorporating Real-Time Maps in our core navigation software firmly establishes TomTom as one of the leading technology providers. This enables car makers to shape the future of mobility together with TomTom."

The new transactional mapmaking platform not only increases efficiencies of the maps, but also reduces the time between identifying the changes in the real world and updating them on the map on a user’s device.

Any real-world change will pass through TomTom’s mapmaking process to assure its accuracy before ending up in a user’s map in a few minutes.

Users with TomTom maps will be able to receive precise and updated maps through their automotive, mobile and location-based online applications.
