TomTom has unveiled a new online navigation service that allows customers to offer a navigation application on internet-connected devices such as smartwatches or smart glasses without storing a large offline map.

The new service integrates well with TomTom’s existing navigation products such as NavKit, NavKit Worker, NavCloud, and latest maps, real-time traffic, best-in-class routing, a comprehensive search function and easy-to-use software development kits.

The service also enables mobile device vendors and web service providers to provide online mapping and navigation applications that don’t require an offline map.

"By offering an online service for our maps, turn-by-turn navigation and traffic information, we can better support the needs of our customers."

To enhance its product line, TomTom has extended its partnership with deCarta.

TomTom licensing managing director Charles Cautley said: "By offering an online service for our maps, turn-by-turn navigation and traffic information, we can better support the needs of our customers.

"This extension of our product portfolio gives our customers the most flexible and complete end-to-end location-based services available today."

Meanwhile, the company has also signed a new deal with Daimler to deploy its navigation system in the Smart car range, to be introduced in Europe in 2014, which will be subsequently introduced in the US and China in 2015.

Under the deal, the Smart Media infotainment system will be added with TomTom’s navigation software and maps.

In addition, it will provide live traffic information service for three years.

TomTom Automotive vice-president Jan-Maarten de Vries told Traffic Technology Today that: "We know that car manufacturers are becoming increasingly focused on creating infotainment systems that deliver a great user experience.

"We believe that our consumer insight, coupled with our world-class digital maps, navigation software and live traffic services makes us a key partner for the world’s leading car manufacturers."
