The UK’s Highways Agency and WheelRight are trialling a drive-over tyre pressure measuring system for three months at Keele Services between Junctions 15 and 16 on the M6.

Running in association with motorway services firm Welcome Break, the UK-developed technology will focus on a new system that measures tyre pressure instantly without the need for any onboard equipment and drivers having to stop their vehicles.

Designed to provide an insight into the state of the nation’s tyres, the trial provides car and heavy goods vehicles (HGV) drivers with a quick and easy way of checking their vehicles’ tyres.

"The Highways Agency have identified tyre pressure under-inflation as a major cause of accidents on the UK’s roads."

After installing one WheelRight system in the HGV area and another for car and van motorists, a team from will be available to answer driver’s questions with regard to the importance of maintaining correct tyre pressures and the way to use the system.

Results will be automatically offered either on a touchscreen or paper printout.

The trial will be located off the southbound M6 at Keele Services and provide free tyre pressure monitoring for cars and HGVs.

WheelRight chief executive John Catling said: "The Highways Agency have identified tyre pressure under-inflation as a major cause of accidents on the UK’s roads.

"The simplicity, ease, convenience and speed of the WheelRight system will encourage drivers to check their tyre pressure’s more regularly, without the need to get out of the vehicle".
