UK Highways Agency to provide traffic updates for hands-free application

6 August 2012

The UK Highways Agency has reached an agreement with Information Logistics to use its traffic update information for the Hands Free Traffic Talker England application.

The app can be downloaded on smartphones to access real-time traffic updates and avoid congestions and plan the journey better.

The UK Highways Agency will provide the data collected from installed monitoring equipment across England's motorways and major A roads, and feed it to Information Logistics.

UK Highways Agency traffic management director Simon Sheldon-Wilson said the agency's collaboration with Information Logistics is a good example of public and private sectors working together to assist road users by providing real-time traffic news and constant updates about incidents on the network.

"We want to allow road users to safely access live and targeted traffic information when they need it," Sheldon-Wilson added.

"The availability of smartphones provides a way to do just that and the introduction of this hands-free app is really exciting, being both iPhone and Android compatible.

"The Highways Agency works to make its information as widely available as possible.

"We already have traffic information sharing agreements with organisations such as GoogleMaps, TomTom and the BBC, and we look forward to working with other partners in the future."

The Highways Agency provides live traffic updates for users through its own digital platforms, iPhone applications, as well as feeding data to other third-party websites and applications.
