Wirral Council in the UK has awarded its Highway Services contract to BAM Nuttall, replacing the existing contract with Colas that will end in March this year.

BAM Nuttall’s contract is for the period between 2014 and 2018, and is subject to signing of the agreed contract.

Wirral Council Highways and Transportation cabinet member Cllr Harry Smith said: "The council is undergoing wholesale transformation in the way it carries out its responsibilities and BAM Nuttall will work with us on our on our main roads and local streets to make those changes a success.

Under the new contract, BAM will work together with highways officers and the current contractor for a smooth handover of operations and programmes of work from 1 April 2014.

Wirral Council’s current contract with Colas, which was valued between £30 and £33m, will end in March this year.

BAM Nuttall has been working in the area for a long time as Cheshire County Council’s long-term highways contractor between 2004 and 2012.

BAM Nuttall awarded Wirral highways contract

Wirral Council has awarded its Highway Services contract from 2014-18 to BAM Nuttall, subject to signing of the agreed contract.

This will replace the existing contract with Colas Ltd that ends in March this year and which was valued at £30 – £33 million.

It is one of the first in the country to be procured using the new national Highways Maintenance Efficiency Programme (HMEP) contract, which is specifically intended for local Council roads, rather than larger roads such as motorways.

Cllr Harry Smith, Wirral Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation, said: "We are looking forward to working with BAM Nuttall in delivering highway services in Wirral which are important to our residents and businesses and support the continued growth in Wirral’s economy.

Cllr Smith added: "Our new contractor will work closely with highways officers and the current contractor to ensure a smooth handover of operations and programmes of work from 1st April this year. BAM Nuttall has a long history of working in this area having been the Cheshire County Council’s long-term highways contractor between 2004 and 2012. They have a highways base at Winsford and offices in Northwich.

Edmund Nuttall & Co, the original company, built the Liver Building in 1908 and carried out most of the construction work for the Queensway Mersey Tunnel from 1925 to 1932 and then – as Edmund Nuttall, Sons and Co Ltd – on the Kingsway Mersey Tunnel from 1967 to 1972.
