The US Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has announced the completion of San Francisco’s $1.1bn Presidio Parkway project.

The Presidio Parkway project is a 1.6 mile-long, six-lane roadway that replaced the Doyle Drive, upgraded the seismic and safety measures, as well as improved the connection between San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge in California.

The project also provided a major regional traffic link between the peninsula and North Bay Area counties.

Investment for the project came from $363m in federal funds, $152.5m from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and a $150m Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (TIFIA) loan.

"Safety is our top priority and the completion of this project should bring peace of mind to all Bay Area drivers."

US Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said: "In addition to solving a decades-old seismic protection problem for a critical Bay Area commuter route, this project represents the sort of large-scale infrastructure improvement America needs.

"We’re counting on Congress to pass the president’s Grow America Act, so more projects like this can begin."

Work under the project also included construction of a tunnel, roadway, viaduct, interchange and landscaping work.

The project has been carried out by the California department of transportation (Caltrans) through a public-private partnership with Golden Link Concessionaire, a private developer.

Caltrans had selected Golden Link to design, finance and build the project’s second phase and then operate and maintain the facility for 30 years following completion.

The completed Presidio Parkway provides drivers a spectacular regional gateway between the Golden Gate Bridge and downtown San Francisco.

Acting federal highway administrator Gregory Nadeau said: "Safety is our top priority and the completion of this project should bring peace of mind to all Bay Area drivers.

"Every city in the nation is counting on Congress to do the right thing and ensure there is long-term highway funding available to help them too."

The project area extends from the Golden Gate Bridge Toll Plaza on the west to Broderick Street on the east, and includes local roads within the Presidio Trust.

The Presidio Parkway has a southbound auxiliary lane between the Park Presidio Interchange connected to Highway 1 and the new Presidio access at Girard Road.
