The eastern section of the $8bn East West Link in Australia has been approved by Victoria’s planning minister Matthew Guy.

Minister Guy said that the East West Link eastern section will deliver a critical transport connection for Victoria.

"The project will significantly improve traffic flows in Melbourne’s inner-north and provide an opportunity for enhanced public transport services," Guy said.

The East West Link Project Assessment Committee was set up in last October to assess the project’s Comprehensive Impact Statement (CIS) prepared by the Linking Melbourne Authority (LMA) and make recommendations.

The latest approval requires the LMA to prepare additional plans for various aspects of the project, as well as establish a process for providing regular information to owners and occupiers of land in areas where further design refinement is to occur.

Guy also confirmed that the approval comprises performance requirements and detailed plans that will oversee the ongoing assessment of the project.

"The East West Link is just one part of the Napthine Coalition government’s $27 billion transport infrastructure pipeline, which also includes Melbourne Rail Link, Cranbourne Pakeningham Rail, level crossing removals and the western section of the East West Link," Guy added.
