WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff (WSP|PB) has secured a contract from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) in the US to design and deploy the next phase of intelligent transportation system (ITS) in the state’s university region.

The project includes planning, designing, development of new CCTV cameras, installation of dynamic message signs, as well as vehicle detection systems across the University Region in order to improve the incident response and information distribution to commuters on the state’s freeway system.

Under the deal, WSP|PB will be serving as the prime consultant for this project and will be responsible for providing ITS design services and expand infrastructure at locations where traffic operations capabilities are limited.

The engineering firm will help MDOT staff in the preparation of conceptual designs, final plans, specifications and estimates and prioritising locations for deployment of ITS infrastructure in the region.

WSP|PB will also provide its expertise to the department in developing designs for ITS systems engineering, communications system designs for maintaining traffic systems, utility coordination, and structural engineering, as well as geotechnical and power designs.

The designing process is expected to be completed later this year.

After completing designs for the proposed systems, WSP|PB will be providing its support to the state's transportation in procurement, installation, as well as integration of the proposed ITS equipment.
